Federal Estate Tax Exemption
Under the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, the federal estate tax exemption was increased to $11,200,000 per individual and $22,400,000 for married couples. For 2024, that exemption was increased to account for inflation and was adjusted to $13,610,000 per individual and $27,220,000 for married couples. The tax rate that these amounts can be exempted remains at 40%.
Generation-Skipping Transfer Tax Exemption
The Generation-Skipping Transfer Tax is a tax on property passing from one generation to another generation that is two or more generational levels below the transferring generation. For example, a grandparent making a transfer to a grandchild. If this is done with proper planning, it can be used to transfer substantial wealth between generations. The Generation-Skipping Transfer Tax Exemption is the amount of money that isn’t taxed by the federal government. This exemption is unified with the federal estate tax exemption and the lifetime gift tax exemption at $11,580,000 per individual and $23,160,000 for married couples.
